1. What are the structures and
functions of the Circulatory System?
1. What are the structures and
functions of the Circulatory System?
• STRUCTURES:
– Heart
– Blood Vessels
• Arteries
– Arterioles
• Veins
– Venules
• Capillaries
– Blood
• RBC’s, WBC’s, and Platelets
• Plasma
1. What are the structures and
functions of the Circulatory System?
• FUNCTIONS:
– To transport O2 from the lungs to the bodies
tissues.
– To transport CO2 from the bodies tissues to
the lungs.
– Maintain homeostasis by carrying nutrients
and waste products.
2. What is the structure of the
heart?
• Atriums – right and left
– Receive blood from the
body
• Ventricles – right and left
– Pump blood to the body
• Valves –
– Prevent the backflow of
blood into the atrium
• Septum
– Separates the right and left
ventricles

3. What are the 3 types of blood
vessels and their Functions? 39
3. What are the 3 types of blood
vessels and their Functions?
• Arteries – carry blood AWAY from the heart.
– Thick walls to deal with high pressure.
– Arterioles – smaller arteries
• Capillaries – one blood cell thick
– where diffusion of CO2 and O2 takes place.
• Veins – Carry blood TOWARD the heart.
– Thin walls because pressure is lower.
– Contain valves to prevent backflow of blood.
– Venules – smaller veins
4. How is blood circulated

Capillaries of the Lungs (pick up O2) 
Pulmonary veins 
LA  LV 
Aorta 
Capillary in the body (drop of O2 / pick up CO2) 
inferior / superior vena cava 
RA  RV 
Pulmonary Artery 
Capillaries of the lungs (Drop of CO2 / Pick up O2)
– ***Pulmonary means lungs***

• Double bubble – arteries vs. veins
• Flow map – blood trail
5. What are the components of
blood? – pg 43
• Connective tissue
• 45% - solid (one of
the 3 types of blood)
• 55% - plasma (watery
substance)
– Carries nutrients and
metabolic waste.
6. What are the functions of blood?
6. What are the functions of blood?
• RBC’s or Erythrocytes – carry O2 and CO2
– Contain hemoglobin which binds O2 and CO2
– NO NUCLEUS – cannot do mitosis to reproduce and
therefore must constantly me made in the Red bone
Marrow.
• WBC’s or Leukocytes – body defense
• Platelets – clot to form scabs
– Hemophiliacs cannot form scabs and can bleed to
death.
• Blood bubble map – top ½
