Circulatory and Respiratory
Systems
Circulatory System
• 2 functions
1. Blood delivers nutrients
(food) and oxygen to cells so
they can function.
Veins and arteries in
the head and hand
2. Blood removes waste products, like
carbon dioxide, from cells.
Respiratory System
• 1 Function
– Supplies body
with fresh
oxygen and
removes
carbon dioxide

Both systems work together
Pulmonary and Systemic
Circulation
• The flow of blood to
the heart (pulmonary)
then lungs, back to the
heart, then out to the
rest of the body
(systemic)
Start with a red
blood cell, sugar,
and CO2 card in
the right
ventricle.
1. Blood with CO2 exits the right
side of the heart
Move the red
blood cell, CO2,
and sugar out of
the heart into
the pulmonary
vein
2. Blood enters lungs, drops off
CO2, and picks up oxygen
Move the blood
cell to the
lungs, drop off
the CO2 and
pick up an
oxygen (O2)
card
3. Blood returns to the left side of
the heart
Move the red
blood cell,
sugar, and
oxygen (O2)
into the left
atrium.
4. Oxygen rich blood is pumped
out of the heart to the rest of the
body
Move the red
blood cell,
sugar, and
oxygen to the
left ventricle,
then out the
aorta.
5. Blood exchanges oxygen for
wastes with other cells in the body
a. Oxygen rich
blood in
b. Oxygen dropped off
d. Blood
returns to heart
Move the blood cell into the
systemic section (body) and
drop off the oxygen and
sugar. Pick up waste
material.
c. Wastes picked up
6. Oxygen poor blood returns in
veins back to the right side of the
heart
Move the red
blood cell and
waste material
into the right
atrium
