Learning Objectives
1. To understand why the left side of the heart
has a ticker wall compared to the right.
2. To be able to recall that theories make
predictions.
3. To understand how the circulatory system
delivers oxygen and glucose to tissues.
• Your body
needs glucose
and oxygen to
make energy
(during
respiration).
• Your circulatory
system will
provide your
cells with these
substances.

Your heart is a muscle about the size of
your fist.
It is constantly beating, on average
about 1 beat every second.
The heart is the organ at the centre of the circulatory system.
It pumps blood around the body.
All the parts of the
heart on either side,
work together
in a repeated
sequence.
This is how blood
moves through the
heart and is pumped to
the lungs and
the body.
One complete
sequence of
contraction and
relaxation is called a
heartbeat.
• If you press your two fingers firmly on your
wrist you can feel the pumping.
• This is your pulse.

Dissection
• Between your
arteries and
veins they are
joined
together by
capillaries.

Discovering Capillaries
• William Harvey (15781657) invented a
theory that said blood
stays in blood vessels
and it is not used up.
• Marcello Malpighi
(1628-1694) found
capillaries using a
microscope.
1. Colour the arteries in red.
2. Colour the veins in blue.
3. Colour the capillaries in yellow.
4. Label on to the heart, the side that
has a thicker wall and explain why
that side has a thicker wall.
5. Explain why William Harvey only
had a theory.

Extension
• Fill in the gaps;
• Blood moves around in a system of tubes called
__________ ____________. The __________
pumps blood around your body. Oxygen-rich blood
moves away from your heart in tubes called
___________. Blood containing waste carbon
dioxide moves back to your heart in __________.
Thin tubes called _______________ join arteries to
veins.
