List any questions, comments
or interesting things you
have from both…

b) Guest speaker yesterday
Circulatory System
• Main purpose of the system = to deliver blood to the
body’s tissues
• Blood carries oxygen, dissolved gasses and nutrients
• Made of blood vessels, arteries, veins and capillaries
• 2 circulatory systems
– From heart to lungs and back (pulmonary)
– From heart to other parts of the body (systemic)
The Heart
Main Purpose: a hollow
muscular pump that moves
blood throughout the body
Our heart pumps faster when we
need more oxygen in our bodies
(exercising, frightened or
excited)
Made of 4 different chambers
separated by valves and septum.
The Heart: Atria (Atrium <- singular)
Main Purpose: upper 2
chambers of the heart that
receive blood entering the
heart
The Heart: Ventricles
Main Purpose: bottom
chambers of the heart that
pump blood out of the heart

Warm-Up
What is the name and
purpose of the…
a) Upper two chambers of
the heart
b) The bottom two chambers
of the heart
ALL LATE WORK DUE BY FRIDAY!!!
Study Club = Wednesday, Friday
(re-opened turning in your dragons)
The rest of this school year…
Monday and Tuesday = finish the circulatory and respiratory
systems
Wednesday and Thursday = research days
Friday (last day for late work) and Monday = study days
Tuesday = TEST day
Wednesday = movie
Thursday = letter writing party
Friday = last day of school
To go back out to the body
Out to the lungs
In from the body
Back into the
heart
How blood moves outside of the heart.
Arteries
Blood vessels that carry
blood away from the
heart.
They are the thickest
vessels with muscular
walls that contract to
keep the blood moving
away from the heart.
Typically shown in RED
Special Arteries
Aorta: the body’s largest
blood vessel which
pumps oxygen rich blood
from the heart to the
rest of the body
Pulmonary Artery:
Carries oxygen-poor
blood away from the
heart to the left and right
lungs.
Veins
Veins carry blood
back to the heart.
They are much thinner
and not as muscular
but contain valves to
prevent blood from
flowing backwards.
Capillaries
Tiny vessels that connect
the arteries and veins.
Even though they are tiny
they are the most
important part of the
circulatory system.
Through them nutrients
and oxygen are delivered
to the cells.

Respiratory System
Take a deep breathe and count to ten…
Respiratory System
Main Purpose: to take
in air from the
environment, filter it
to get oxygen and
then release carbon
dioxide from our body
Throat (Pharynx) and Epiglottis
Throat Main Function: To
transport air to the trachea
and bronchi (and food to
the digestive system).
Epiglottis M.F: prevents
food from traveling into
the air-only passage of our
throat.
Trachea
Main Function: Connects the
throat to the bronchi and helps
transport air and protect lungs.
Made up of 16-20 rings of
cartilage and muscle which
makes it felixble and able to
twist. It also has a mucus
membrane to filter foreign
items.
Lungs: Bronchi and Bronchioles
Main Function: small tubes
that connect the lungs to
the trachea and deliver air
to the alveoli.
They can be as thin as a
strand of hair and are made
of cartilage and skin like
tissues.
Lungs: Alveoli
Main Function: where the
exchange of oxygen and
carbon dioxide takes
place.
These are tiny air sacs that
could cover a tennis court
if they were spread out.
Diaphragm
Main Function:
Separates your chest
from your abdomen. It
helps create pressure so
our lungs can expand
and relax as we breath.
