Respiratory System
In Class Notes
Functions
• To supply the blood with oxygen
– Oxygen is needed throughout the body
– The body does this through breathing
• Breathing also helps the environment!
– We lean on the trees for oxygen and the truth is they need us
too!
Organs Involved
• Mouth
– Takes in air leading to the…
• Trachea!
– Not the esophagus though! In this tube air travels downward and
splits of into bronchi (plural). I bet you know were this goes
• Lungs
– Smaller cavities in the lungs, alveoli, hold oxygen in themselves.
The lungs take oxygen and ship it to the blood stream
• Diaphragm
– A muscular sheet lying below the lungs. It allows for the lungs to
contract (expel carbon dioxide) and expand (take in oxygen).
• Nose
– Winner of honorable mention. Air is also, and more healthily,
through the nose. The warmth that air gets through the nose
helps the throat
Bronchioles
1. Air enters through nose or mouth
2. Air goes through the pharynx and larynx (aka. vocal
cords), and into the trachea
3. Air enters lungs through trachea, bronchi break off of
trachea
4. Bronchioles then branch off the two bronchi
5. At the tip of the thousands of each bronchiole are alveoli
6. Oxygen is exchanged with Carbon Dioxide from blood
7. Carbon Dioxide exits body by the same path as oxygen
entered
How is breathing regulated?
• What organ controls it? The lung and
brain and heart
• What causes increases and decreases in
rates? Activity stress and many others
What effects does smoking have on
the respiratory system?
•
•
•
•
•
•
Cancer
Diffuculty
Hackers cough
Tarry lungs
Shutdown of RS
Raised blood pressure
Name at least 3 disorders &
provide a description:
Asthma– causes breathing difficulty and cuts
off oxygen flow
Pneumonia – causes coughing fever and
vomiting but all really bad
TB – cough up blood and others like death
and chest pain appetite loss
