Respiratory System
Vocabulary
1. Respiratory System- the organ system
that enables you to take in oxygen and
get rid of Carbon Dioxide.
Respiratory Pathway
1. Nose- air enters your body through your
nose.
2. Jobs of the nose1. Cleans 2. Moistens 3. Warms
4. Cilia- Hair-like structures lining the
passageways of the nose.
5. Cilia job- as air moves through these
passageways the cilia moves back and
forth filtering out tiny bits of dirt.
6. Capillaries- Found on the inner surface of the
nose. They are tiny blood vessels and they
warm the air.
7. Coarse Nose Hairs- also filter dust and dirt
particles.
8. Why do you breathe through the nose?
Nose breathing is better than mouth breathing.
Mouth breathing gives you more air but the air is
not filtered.
9. Pharynx- back of your
throat. The pharynx
ends with 2 tubes. One
tube is the esophagus
(for food)
10. Trachea- the other
tube that is for air. This
is how air gets to your
lungs.
11. Epiglottis- the small
door that covers the
trachea so food does
not go down the wrong
pipe. The door is open
for talking, breathing
and laughing.
12. Larynx- voice box. Contains your vocal
cords. Vocal cords are flexible bands of
tissue. When you speak air moves from
the lungs and causes the vocal cords to
vibrate. The vibration is what makes our
sounds.
13. Trachea- Tube that
connects your nose
and mouth to your
bronchi. You can feel
ridges an bumps
when you rub your
neck.
14. Ridges-these
bumps or ridges are
actually cartilage
rings that keep your
trachea open.
• 15. Cilia- the inner lining of the
trachea has cilia. Cilia act like brooms
sweeping dirt and dust up the
trachea. When you cough these
particles are pushed up and out of the
throat. Smoking causes the cilia to
stop working.
16. Bronchi- air from the trachea passes into the 2
bronchi. One leading to each lung. These carry
air to the lungs.
17. Bronchioles- inside the lungs. Smaller and
smaller branches from the bronchi. The smallest
of these branches are called bronchioles.
18. Alveoli- at the end of the bronchioles are
microscopic air sacs called alveoli. The
alveoli are surrounded by capillaries.
Oxygen leaves the lungs and goes in the
blood. CO2 leaves the blood and goes into
the lungs.
19. Breathing- inhaling and exhaling
20. Cellular Respiration- cells take the
Oxygen O2 and food to create/release
energy. They then make a waste called
Carbon Dioxide CO2.
