Explain the basic
functions of the
human immune
system, including
specific and
nonspecific immune
response, vaccines,
and antibiotics.
What do I need to know?
Identify and/or explain the basic
functions of the human immune
system, including specific and
nonspecific immune responses.
Describe the basic function of
vaccines and/or antibiotics.
Explain the significance of
genetic factors, environmental
factors, and pathogenic agents
to health from the perspective of
both individual and public health
Immune Response
There are two different
immune responses:
-Non Specific Defense
(innate) is a general
response that targets any
pathogen or foreign body.
Includes the use of the skin,
white blood cells, and
macrophages.
-Specific Defense (acquired)
is a targeted response to one
specific pathogen. Includes
the use of anti bodies, t-cells
and macrophages. The
specific defense also leads
to the creation of memory
cells.

Guiding Questions
1) What are elements
of the non specific
response?
2) What are elements
of the specific
response?
3) How are antibodies
specific to antigens?
4) What are the role of
memory cells?
Vaccines
Vaccines are substances
used to provoke a specific
immune response in the
body leading to immunity
from a specific pathogen.
Vaccines are often created
from a weakened form of a
pathogen, part of a
pathogen or a synthetic
substitute
Vaccines provide immunity
because the specific
immune response leads to
the formation of memory
cells.

Guiding Questions
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are a group of
compounds that can
destroy and inhibit the
growth of
microorganisms and are
widely used in the
treatment and prevention
of infection.
Antibiotic resistant
bacteria are groups of
bacteria that are not
affected by antibiotics
