Vaccines
Vaccines
• Protect our body from contracting viruses and
certain types of bacteria
• Allow body to become immune to a specific
pathogens
– Example: Flu vaccine
• Pathogen: disease-causing agents such as
viruses or bacteria
How does a vaccine work?
1. A doctor injects a person with a dead or
weakened version of a pathogen
2. Your cells attack the intruding
dead/weakened pathogen and produce
antibodies
How does a vaccine work?
3. If you are exposed to the real pathogen the
antibodies are ready to attack it before it
causes sickness
• A vaccine is like “practice” so your body can
learn to fight the real pathogen
