Language and Power
• Language is much more than a set of words and
phrases with which we use to communicate
• it can be used as a means of controlling or shaping
the thoughts of others
• ‘Power’ refers to the ability of an entity*
(e.g. company, individual, social or political group)
to a) make change, or conversely, b) to maintain
things as they are.

• Where is it evident in contemporary society
whereby an entity* employs language to
influence people’s thoughts, behaviours and
attitudes in order to:
a) make change
b) maintain things as they are
