What is PROPAGANDA?
PROPAGANDA is….
Information, especially of a biased or
misleading nature, used to promote a
particular political cause or point of
view.
What does that mean ?
How is it used?
Propaganda is used to influence or
manipulate information in order to persuade
opinion
Used to great effect by media, governments
and advertising among others
How is propaganda different
from information?
Information should be objective with NO
bias
Propaganda always has a desired effected –
a goal that it is trying to make. I.e. to make
men enlist
Is propaganda good or bad?

Techniques used in
propaganda
Bandwagon is…
trying to convince the subject that one side is the winning
side, because more people have joined it.
meant to believe that since so many people have joined,
that victory is inevitable and defeat impossible
Everyone wants to be on the winning side
Card Stacking is…
It involves only presenting
information that is positive to an idea
And leaving out any information
contrary to it.
Glittering Generalities is…
Words used that have a very positive
meaning and linked highly valued by
society
Instant approval for these words
Example, something is “in defense of
democracy”, everyone will say “yes”.
Lesser of Two Evils is …
Helps justify the need for sacrifice
during wartime
Shows the only path to take for
victory
Name Calling…
attempts to arouse prejudice among the public
by labeling the target something that the
public dislikes.
Often, name calling is employed using sarcasm
and ridicule, and shows up often in political
cartoons or writings.

Simplifying the conflict and
making the enemy into our
personal enemy
