Appeal to Authority
Appeal to Authority
(association): A writer may
mention an important event or
person (or even a pet of
importance) in essays, a speech,
or commercial to lend importance
or credibility to his/her argument…
Translation into Kid-ese :
• Appeal to authority means:
• Use the name of some important guy or
person that people admire to make it
seem like he or she thinks your ideas or
products are the absolute greatest.
Morris type cats are the
authority on cat food.
Morris type cats are
impersonated by
experts onMorris

Purrcival Clawed, Mrs.
Morris eats only
Friskies.
Bova’s
cat.
Card Stacking
•Card Stacking: tells
the facts for one
side only…as Gus
while chasing the
cat.
It is all the
cat’s fault; he
needs exercise.
I only played
chase to help
BJ exercise.
He told me,
really, to help
him exercise.
The cat made me do it.
Emotional Appeal
• Emotional Appeal: Writers
may appeal to fear, anger or
joy to sway their readers.
• They may also add climax or
excitement.
The mice are gathering
beside the porch. . They
plan to take over the
entire house and family…
only cats can save the
family. Act now… get
more cats.
Free or Bargains
•Free or Bargain: a
speaker suggests that
the public can get
something for nothing
or almost nothing
Just show up,
No practice,
Hop on the
beam…score
10 with no effort,
No Sweat,
No problems!
Name Calling
• Name Calling:
describing bad aspects of a
competitor's product so that
the advertised product
seems better…
Wilson’s
basketball is the
best. Rally balls
have no bounce,
are expensive,
and do not last
more than a
season.
They want to “mold” your thinking.
• Propaganda is
applied by
advertisers, radio and
television
announcers, and
sports and music
personalities…
anyone who wants to
influence human
behavior.
YIKES!
Beware the dreaded---
