Character and Settings
An author tells you what the
characters do and say.
Sometimes you can tell what
a character is feeling from
what he or she says and
does. Sometimes the author
tells you diectly what a
character is feeling.
The people or
animals in the
story are its
characters.
What can you
learn about the
characters as
you read a
story?
Character and Settings
The setting is when and
where a story takes place.
A setting can be real or
imaginary. When you read,
what details can you look
for to tell you about the

Listening Comprehension
Character and Setting
Today we are
going to read
about two girls
who are best
friends (page
292-293).
The first paragraph of “Best
Friends” tells me the names of
two characters in the storyTara and Crystal- and that
these characters are friends. I
also learn that the setting of the
story is a big city.
If we don’t understand what we are
reading we can look at the story
structure.....
I know that what happens in a story
happens in order. I can look for clue
words to help me understand the order.
In the 3rd paragraph, the author uses
the phrase “the next morning.” That tells
me that Crystal broke her arm the day
after she and Tara drew chalk pictures.
Conventions:
A pronoun takes the place of a
noun or nouns.
He, him, and his are all
