Word Ladders By: Christina Woods
Created by Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland in 1878.
The first and last word are related in some way, such as fall-down
and the middle words much be real words.
Game where students change one word into another through a
series of steps, altering a single letter at each step. The goal is to
use as few steps as possible to change the first word into the last.
Steps to Doing a Word Ladder
1. Teacher creates the word ladder.
2. Pass out the supplies.
3. Do the ladder.
4. Review the ladder.
Teachers can create word ladders to practice phonics, spelling, and
vocabulary skills with their students.
They guide students to build a series of words as they provide
graphophonemic and semantic clues about the words.
Word ladders are a fun way for students to practice phonics skills
they’re learning and, at the same time, think about the meanings of
the words.
