As was outlined in our letter last week, many of the spellings that will be given as homework in Year
Five are from the 100 key words for Y5/Y6 from the new Primary Curriculum to be introduced in full
from next academic year (14/15). These spellings will be covered in Spelling, Punctuation and
Grammar lessons. Other spellings will include words that are frequently misspelt. This approach will
be similar to our colleagues (and classmates!) in Year Six. So, you may well see your older siblings
with similar spellings!
It’s important for learners to expand their vocabulary, know what new words mean and use them in
context, hence the need to practise them in a sentence. Additionally, punctuation and grammar are
important components for an effective writer, hence the Success Criteria. Finally, each child will be
working at a different level, so the Differentiation should help your child to stretch themselves to
an appropriate level!
