Well Being
Mission Statement:
• The mission of the Okemos High School
Guidance Office is to develop informed, selfdirected, resourceful, and assertive students
who will graduate within four years of entry and
leave high school with clearly defined postsecondary plans. While doing so, we reach
students on an emotional and individual level
proportional to student needs to provide timely
interventions and develop lasting relationships.
How to Make an Appointment
1. Students should visit the Guidance Office between
classes, during lunch, or before or after school.
2. Mrs. Schiro will check the counselor’s schedule and
indicate the days and times the counselor is available.
Students are advised to pick a day and time based on
when they can most afford to miss class.
3. Mrs. Schiro will write a pass. When it is time for the
appointment, students should show the pass to their
teacher and then bring it with them to the Guidance
Office.
4. Students may also schedule appointments via the
website.

College Planning
• Should follow career exploration
• Many factors go into making a decision about a best fit college
•
•
•
•
•
Programs in area of career interest
Cost
Location
Size
Feel
• Steps to take:
• 9th and 10th grade-career exploration, academic progress
• 11th grade-college exploration, campus visits
• 12th grade-submit applications and make enrollment decisions
Setting expectations
• Check college admission rates
• For many highly selective colleges, they are below 10%
• Students denied admission are in good company
• OHS admits a few students to some of the most
selective colleges across the country each year
• A 4.0 or a perfect ACT or SAT is not a ticket
anywhere
• Colleges prefer depth over breadth
• Authentic voice in admissions essays
• U of M admits about 60% of OHS applicants
• (that’s really good!)
