Northern Africa Campaign
• Sept 1940: Mussolini attacks Egypt, wants the British controlled Suez Canal
• Feb 1941: British strike back and take over 130,000 Italian prisoners
• Mar 1941: Hitler sends his best general Erwin Rommel to N. Africa
• Rommel pushes Gen. Bernard Montgomery & his British troops into Libya
•Jan 1942: Monty’s British troops
counterattack & push back Rommel
•June 1942: Rommel pushes the British
back again, earning him the nickname
“Desert Fox”
•While the fighting is going on in Britain
& Africa, other German generals are
focusing on the Soviet Union

Germany has to attack Soviet Union from the south, need to take the Balkans
Jan 1941: Hitler gets Bulgaria, Hungary & Romania to join the Axis powers
April 1941: Greece & Yugoslavia resist, Germany blitzkriegs those countries
Now that Hitler controls the Balkans, he starts Operation Barbarossa
