Hitler Turns His Attention to the
Balkans
• Hitler goal to take over the
Balkans in order to attack
Russia
• By early 1941, Hitler
persuaded Bulgaria, Hungary,
Romania to join the Axis
• Greece & Yugoslavia (pro
British Govt.) resisted
• Hitler defeats Yugoslavia in 11
days
• Greece fell in 17 days
Operation Barbarossa
• June 22, 1941 Germany begins
the attack on Russia
• Russia had the largest army in
the world
• Not well equipped or trained
• Germans were able to move
500 miles inside the Soviet
border
• As Soviet troops retreated,
they used scorched-earth
strategy

• Sept. 8th, German forces
put Leningrad under siege
• Hitler was ready to starve
the city to get a surrender
• German bombs destroyed
warehouses of food
• People ate horse feed, cats
& dogs, last crows & rats
• City refused to fall

• Hitler becomes impatient and
looks at Moscow
• Oct. 2, 1941 the Nazi’s move
onto Moscow
• By December they were on the
outskirts of the city
• Soviets began to put up a
resistance
• As winter approached the
Germans were not equipped for
the harsh Soviet Winter
Germans vs the Soviets
• Germans had only their
summer uniforms and
were forced to retreat
• Hitler orders his troops and
generals “No Retreat”
• Germans dug in outside of
Moscow until March 1943
• Germans gained nothing
from Russia and lost
500,00 soldiers

• Many American’s felt the U.S. should stay out of the war
• Congress passed Neutrality Acts, which made it illegal to
sell arms or lend money to nations at war
• Roosevelt knew the U.S. would be in a war soon
• Roosevelt asks Congress to allow the Allies to buy goods
from the U.S. but transport them on their own ships
• Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act in March 1941
• U.S. Navy began to escort British supply ships
• Roosevelt & Churchill organized the Atlantic Charter
• Sept. 4th, German U-Boat fires on the USS Greer
