Beginning of the Offensive
• Operation Barbarossa
was a code name for
the Nazi invasion of
the USSR and the
attempt to control
Russia. It holds the
record for largest
military operation in
history.
Propaganda Machine in Germany
• To start approval for
attacking Russia,
Germany started
spreading rumors about
an attack by Russia on
Germany.
• Even before this, though,
Hilter wrote in his book
that Germany needed to
take land in the East to
spread out and live.
Preparation For Battle
• To get ready, Hitler sent
about 4.2 million soldiers
to the Soviet Union
Border.
• Stalin, though, did not
believe that Hitler would
attack him, and did
nothing to prepare to fight
him. He also did not think
that Hitler would try and
fight on a new front,
which he would be doing
trying to invade the
USSR.
The Fighting Begins
• The Axis powers started
the attack on June 22nd.
The sheer number of
troops going over the
Soviet border was a
shock to the Soviet
powers.
• On the first day alone, the
German airforce claimed
to have destroyed over
2,000 aircrafts on Soviet
bases.
Ending of the War
• The demise of the Axis powers
was the thought that the war
would not last long in Russia,
but it ended up being long and
hard fought.
• When the Axis powers
surrounded Moscow, they
knew if they could not get
supplies they would be
defeated. Because Russia
knew this, they had everyone
evacuate and burn all
resources. When the Axis
arrived to an empty city, they
were crushed, and were forced
to return home to stay alive.
Result of the Operation
• Many things occurred
after the defeat.
• The defeat was a turning
point for Russia as well
as being a downward
spiral for the Axis.
Another big change was it
opened up the Eastern
Front for Russia to take
and to make Germany
fight a 2 front war, which
would be very difficult to
accomplish.
