During the 1930’s
Italy, Germany and Japan wanted to build
empires
 The League of Nations was weak
 Western countries were recovering from
the Great Depression
 As a result acts of aggression went
unchecked.

Japan Invades China
In 1931 Japan seized Chinese territory of
Manchuria
 League of Nations condemned their action
 Japan withdrew their membership out of
the League
 This incident will strengthen militarism in
Japan

In 1937 Japan invades the mainland of
China and puts in a puppet government in
Nanjing
 Japan was so brutal in overtaking Nanjing
that it became known as the Rape of
Nanjing
 Japan continued to gain territory in China

Italy attacks Ethiopia
In 1935 – Italy will attack Ethiopia
 The Ethiopian king appealed to the
League of Nations
 League of Nations said that it would stop
the sale of arms to Italy
 Not all nations in the League abided by
this

German Aggression in Europe
Hitler glorified war as a means of restoring
German national pride
 Hitler rebuilt the German army – which
violated the treaty of Versailles
 1936 Hitler sent troops into the Rhineland
an area that was located on the border of
France and Germany

1938 – Hitler made Austria part of the
German Empire
 He forced Czechoslovakia to give
Germany a border area called the
Sudetenland where many Germans lived

