HOW DO I
COMPETE?
What is DECA Competition?
Allows you to demonstrate skills learned
in the marketing classroom.
Allows students to interact with
business leaders.
Allows students to practice leadership
skills.
The ticket to travel and exciting new
adventures for students.
A way for students to win scholarship
money.
How Do I Compete?
The DECA Competitive Events Program
provides a variety of competitive
opportunities.
Each member may choose the event which
most closely relates to their career
interest and their abilities.
Competitive Events include testing only
events, testing and role-play events,
written presentations, team events, and
chapter events.

Individual Series Events
Participants take a 100 question exam
over marketing concepts and industry
specific information.
Participants also participate in a role
play activity with a judge from business
and industry.
Students have 10 minutes to prepare
for the role-play and 10 minutes with
the judge.

Students work as partners (2 members)
Each student takes a 100 question exam over
marketing concepts and industry specific
information.
Students work together to present solutions
to a specific case.
Students present their answers to the judge
in a role-play activity.
The students have 30 minutes to prepare the
case study and 15 minutes to present to the
judges.

Marketing Research Events
Students may compete alone or in teams of 1 to 3
members.
Students conduct marketing research in one of a
number of specific industries.
Students report their findings in a 17-30 page
written manual.
Students also present their results in a 15 minute
role play with a judge.
The 2010 topic for each occupational category is the development of a
strategic plan to enhance the current employee-training program of
an existing business. The training program relates to characteristics
such as training content, methods of instruction, selection of media
used for instruction, etc. Using an existing business of their choice,
participants will research the current training program and its
effectiveness. Participants will develop a strategic plan to enhance
the current training program.

Business Management and
Entrepreneurship Events
Students work in a variety of formats to
create business plans for existing businesses
or for the creation of new businesses.
Students may work in teams of 1 – 3 members
except in the Entrepreneurship Participating
Events. These events are for only 1 chapter
member.
Participating Events are 11 pages in length and
all other events are 30 pages.

Students participate individually or
in teams.
Students prepare a 10 page written
promotional plan.
The exception is the Technical Sales
Event which contains no written
material.
Students present a 20 minute
prepared presentation to the judge.
Marketing Representative Events
Advertising Campaign Event – students must
prepare an advertising campaign for an
existing company or product.
This event
consists of a team with 1-3 members. These
students also take a test.
Fashion Merchandise Promotional Plan –
Individual students prepare a 10 day
promotional campaign for an existing company
or product. These students also take a test.
Technical Sales Event – Individual students
prepare a formal sales presentation using a
given product. Products change yearly and
current information may be found in the
DECA Guide.
Special Activities
DECA Quiz Bowl – A state team made up of students
from a number of schools competes against teams
from other states. To qualify students test on
marketing concepts and DECA information at the
state conference..
Virtual Business Challenge –Students compete online
through the National DECA Website (www.deca.org)
the Virtual Business simulation.
Stock Market Game- Participants in the SIFMA
Foundation Stock Market Game develop and manage
an investment portfolio. The Stock Market Game is
conducted via the Internet and allows DECA members
to test their skills against other DECA members in an
online competition. Each participating team manages
all aspects of the portfolio including stock selection,
buying and selling. The goal of the competition is to
increase the value of the beginning portfolio.
Georgia DECA State Only
Competitive Events
A series of competitions held only in the state
of Georgia.
Winners in these events serve as voting
delegates or delegates in the leadership
academies at the International Career
Development Conference.
These events consist of individual test and roleplay events.
