Cell Structure and Function
Two Main Types of Cells
• Prokaryotic Cells
– Lacks a cell nucleus (control center) or any
other membrane-bound Organelles
– Examples : Bacteria
• Eukaryotic Cells
– Have a cell nucleus and is broken into many
different “parts” called organelles.
– Examples: Animals, Plants
What is an organelle?
• What do you think?
• Organelle - a specialized subunit within a
cell that has a specific function, and is
separately enclosed within its own
membrane
• What do organelles remind you of?
– OUR ORGANS! – they function in very similar
ways
What Organelles are found in the
“typical” eukaryotic cell? What are
their jobs?
• We will be copying the following chart into
our notes (go to MS word doc)
What do the organelles look like?
Can you figure out these organelles based on our
descriptions?
