There were lots of cultures that went to the
Everglades
American Indians were the first people to
come to the Everglades
In the early 1500’s, Spanish explores came
to Florida looking for gold!
Marjory Stoneman Douglas was one of the
first people to see the need to protect the
area.
Waterways




The Everglades biggest problem is loss of
water.
The canals also change the water flow from
Lake Okeechobee.
A canal system is draining the water from the
area
The water loss is changing the parks
ecoysystem
Rocks And Minerals




There are all sorts of kinds of rocks and
minerals `in the Everglades
The calcium carbonate are tiny bits of shell
or sand in layer upon layer
The resulting spherical grains of limestone
are called ooids
The rocks beneath the southeast section of
the park were formed in the sea
