Landforms
•The Everglades are made of one landform.
•Made of grasslands pahayokee
•Flat area of land
•Created by limestone
Waterways
• The Everglades biggest problem is loss of water.
– A canal system is draining the water from the area.
– Water loss is changing the parks ecosystem.
– The canals also change the water flow
Culture
• There were lots of cultures in the Everglades
– American Indians were the first people to come to the
Everglades
– In the early 1500s, Spanish explorers came to Florida for gold.
Rocks and Minerals
• There are all sorts of kinds of rock and minerals in the
Everglades.
• Millions of years ago, glaciers covered most of North
America.
• Shells, mud, and sand hardened at the bottom of the ocean
and formed limestone. Above this rock layer are the
wetlands and grasslands that make up the Everglades.
How the culture changed
• Over time, people in the Everglades
changed
– 1817-1858 Seminole Indians and the US
fought over land
– Marjory Stoneman Douglas saw a need to
protect the park.
– Spanish explorers came to try to convert
Indians when they came to look for gold.
