Transcript The Rock Cycle
8/30/13Lesson Objectives:
pg. 4 in journal
What I expect you to learn
• To know and define the 3 main types of
rocks
• To understand the different agents
(causes) of weathering
• To know how sedimentary rock is formed
• To be able to define and perform (do to
playdough/clay)
– Weathering, erosion, deposition, cementation
The Rock Cycle
Hold on a minute
Lets start over… from the begining
Make me: Tree map rock types
pg. 5
3 Main rock types
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
Igneous
Draw me on page 6
Wait… what did you say? Write
these under the tree map
• Sedimentary: formed by cementing of
sediment layers
• Metamorphic: transformed due to heat and
pressure into another rock
• Igneous: Formed by cooling magma/lava
Now lets go one step at a time
Weathering, Not that kind of rock
Definition: The breaking down of rocks into
smaller pieces…. What can break rocks?
Erosion: The moving of sediment
Wind, water, ice, animals can all erode!
Deposition: When the sediment that was being
transported stops.
Deposit.. Get it … like at a bank
Follow the arrows…
Hold on a second.. Not as bad as it looks
So.. Back to Weathering
• How can rocks be broken
• 3 main categories
• Physical: running water, freezing water,
moving ice, rockslides
• Chemical: acid rain
• Biological (living things): plants and
animals
The effects of weathering
Methods of transportation
(erosion)

Formation of sedimentary rock
• Later this week we will make our own
rocks
• So what will we use
– Sediment
– Cementing agent (ingredient), in nature these
are minerals.. This can take a while (many
many years) we have a week so we may
cheat a bit.. Only a little
– Water (helps compact and mix in the
cementer)
Have a great weekend
• Thank you all very much, I have greatly
enjoyed my first week as your teacher and
look forward to the fun ways to learn ahead
• Homework over the weekend!?!?!?!?!?!
– Bring 2 rocks to class next week…. See not so
bad now is it.
