Geology Part 3
Rocks
Standard 3.5.7.A
• III. ROCKS: solid mineral material that
comprises the Earth’s surface
A. Rock Cycle: continuous changing of rocks
from one kind to another over long
periods of time: all rocks are igneous in
origin but can be changed to sedimentary
or metamorphic in any order
1.crytalization : solidification
2.metamorphism : changing as a result of
heat, pressure, or chemical reaction
3.lithification : changing into rock
4. weathering: breaking down rocks and
other materials at the Earth’s surface
a. decomposition: chemical change
that breaks down rock as a
result of reactions with organic
substances in the soil or with
acid rain
b. disintegration: mechanical
change that causes the breakdown of
rock due to the action of wind, ice,
plant roots, or water

5.erosion : process by which the products
of weathering are moved from one
place to another
6. melting: reduction of a solid to a liquid
state through the use of heat
