 All of you will understand what ornaments are in
music.
 All of you will understand that Baroque music
uses different ornaments to Classical music.
 Most of you will begin to understand what the
differences are and be able to hear them.
 Some of you will begin to use the correct
terminology when identifying the differences
between Baroque and Classical.
What is an ornament in music?
 Decorative notes which embellish a melody.

How are they used in Baroque
music?
 Ornaments are a characteristic feature of Baroque
music, especially in any repeated sections of a piece.

 Even though you may not see many ornaments written
out in the music itself, they are usually added in by
performers to decorate the melody.

How are they used in Classical
music?
 Ornaments are not used as much as they were in the
Baroque music. The melodies sound quite straight
forward in comparison.
 If ornaments are used they tend to be turns or
appoggiatura’s.
