Optimum and Performance
Learning Objectives
• To investigate the different classification of
weight categories and how these can affect
performance.
• Learning outcomes
– To understand the definitions of the different
classifications of weight (C)
– Be bale to apply them through commenting on how
they could affect a persons performance. (B-A)
Optimum Weight
• Your optimum weight is the weight at which
you perform at your best at the activities you
do.
Factors that affect your optimum
weight
• Bone structure – some people have a larger bone structure than
others. The more bone you have the higher your optimum weight will be.
• Muscle Girth – this is a measurement of the circumference
around your muscles when flexed. larger muscle girth means a higher
optimum weight.
• Gender – Men and Women naturally have different body
composition. Men usually have higher bone structures and muscles girth.
• Activity – your optimum weight depends on the amount and type of
activity you do.
• Age – as you age you lose muscle and bone density. Because of this your
optimum weight gets lighter.
Overweight, Overfat or Obese
• Overweight – weighing more than is normal
• Overfat – having more body fat than you
should
• Obese - being very over fat
– Who is who?
How do these effect performance
• Being overweight doesn't necessarily mean your unhealthy,
you could just have more muscle than average. Being
overweight is usually only harmful when it’s caused by
being overfat or obese.
• Poor diet or overeating can cause becoming over
• fat or obese. As a result you cab get tired more easily and
not be able to do high endurance sports.
• Being overfat can limit your flexibility, and the stress that
the extra weight puts on your body can make it potentially
harmful to do vigorous exercise.
• Obesity usually has a bad affect on performance, however
some sports require you to be obese (sumo wrestling)
Underweight and Anorexia
• Underweight – weighing less than normal for
your body size.
• Anorexia – an eating disorder where people
believe they are fat and starve themselves to
lose weight.
How do these affect performance
• Being underweight because of poor diet or
under eating may mean you don't have
enough energy or endurance to do physical
activities for long periods of time.
• Without sufficient nutrients in their diet,
sufferers will feel extremely tired, their
muscles will start to waste away and their
bones weaken – doing any physical activity
can become extremely difficult.
