The World Health Organization , WHO
for short, was established as a
specialized agency of the United
Nations in 1948. The WHO was the
first global health organization. The
official date was April 7, 1948. April 7
is now celebrated as World Health
Day. Their headquarters is located in
Geneva, Switzerland.
About WHO
The World Health Assembly
is the governing body of
the WHO. Currently there
is 192 delegates from the
member nations. The
Assembly meets every year
in may at the WHO
headquarters and approve
the budget. The executive
board is composed of
elected members. These
members are elected by the
assemble for three year
terms. The members are
usually doctors.

Organization comes from two sources.
One is assessed contributions from
member nations. The second is from
voluntary contributions from both
members and nonmembers.

The WHO is actively fighting against tuberculosis. They
are trying to find a faster diagnosis key to finding drug
resistant TB in the Republic of Moldova. One of the newly
found diagnostic tools that is used to detect TB is called the
Xpert MTB/RIF. It can detect the infection in under two
hours.
They are bringing awareness to alcohol related harm in
unborn babies. Communities all over the world are now
taking a stand to stop this harm with the help of the WHO.
In developing nations the WHO has tools to control and
prevent noncommunicable diseases. Their first target is to
reduce the mortality rate of diseases such as
cardiovascular, cancer, and diabetes by 25%.
Current Projects

The WHO sends outreach teams to mostly
underdeveloped countries that may have a outbreak
of infectious diseases. For example in 1967 the WHO
launched a multi million dollar vaccination
campaign against smallpox. They traveled to the
underdeveloped countries to vaccinate children and
by 1980 the WHO officially announced the world
was smallpox free.
