Vaccinations
• Edward Jenner was an English doctor
developed the world’s first vaccine in 1796
• He noticed that dairy farmers, who contracted
cowpox, did not contract the more serious
smallpox.
• To test his theory, he injected some cowpox
serum into a boy (talk about being a guinea pig),
and later injected him with smallpox.
• Jenner was right, the boy did not develop
smallpox.
• Louis Pasteur
discovered that
bacteria cause
diseases.
• He also discovered
that bacteria
reproduce, rather
than magically
appearing
• He realized that
bacteria, as living
creatures, could be
killed, thereby
preventing many
diseases.
Improvements in Surgery
• Prior to the 1840s surgery was…less than
pleasant.
• In the 1840s a dentist from Boston and Sir
James Simpson from Scotland
experimented with different forms of
anesthesia
• Joseph Lister used carbolic acid to
sterilize medical instruments
Atomic Theory
• English
chemist, John
Dalton
proved
atomic theory.
• Discovered
that elements
are made up
of elements.
The Curies
• Ivan Pavlov
researched
the effects of
outside stimuli
on animals
• When the bell
rang the dog
knew it was
feeding time
• Became
known
popularly as
Pavlovian
