The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
The Diamond Jubilee
marks 60 years of
Queen Elizabeth II’s
accession to the throne.
The major celebrations
for the Jubilee are set to
take place in June 2012.
Music will play a large part in the celebrations, with some
pieces being specially composed for the event. This includes
a song composed by Orlando Gough with words by the poet
laureate Carol Ann Duffy, and the official Jubilee song ‘Sing’
created by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
♫ Can you think of any other events that
music has been composed for? ♫

Why music?
Music is an integral part of most cultures and societies.
All countries tend to have patriotic songs. Most countries
also have official national anthems that have either been
especially written or have been adopted by the country to
mark important national occasions.
For example, the British national anthem is ‘God save the
Queen,’ whereas ‘Rule Britannia’ is a patriotic British song.
Patriotic song: a
song that expresses
pride in a country.
Anthem: a song
praising and declaring
loyalty to a country,
cause or organization.

Music and celebration
Music plays an important role in
religious and secular celebrations.
Religious festivals have particular
pieces of music associated with
them, and sporting events also
make use of music, for example:
carols are sung at Christmas
football fans often sing to
celebrate a goal or to encourage
their team, and music is played
when the players process out of
the tunnel at the start of a match.

Music and special events
Some music is composed specifically for a special event,
whereas other music becomes associated with an event after
it has been composed.

‘Auld Lang Syne’ is a poem which was set to a
traditional Scottish folk song. It was quickly adopted as
a Hogmanay song in Scotland, and is now sung in
many countries at midnight on January 1st.
