Hot-seating
A playwright must create an impression of a character in
just a few words. It is the actor’s job to imagine the character
behind the dialogue. Hot-seating is a helpful way of voicing
the actor’s ideas and probing deeper into a character’s life.
Nominate one person to play the part of Mrs Johnston. This
person will sit on a hot seat and will be asked questions by
the class, which he/she must answer in role.
Ask questions which will help the
person sitting on the hot seat to
learn more about their character.

Devised drama
Using the story of Blood Brothers as a model, rather than
following the script, try setting the play in modern Britain.
This technique of developing a drama from an idea instead
of a script is called devised drama.
Try to think of some changes that you could make to Blood
Brothers to modernize it. For example, how would the story
change if the twins were girls? What if they lived in a different
city? What if their families were from different cultural groups?
Create three scenes from your new version of the story.
Write down how you would stage the scenes, what lighting
you would use, and what music and sound effects you would
include in them.
Evaluate your practical and written work afterwards.
