Movement
You should try to use some movement in your drama about
a journey to clarify where you are and what you are doing.
Practise using your gait, facial expressions and gestures
to demonstrate the following scenarios:
1. You are struggling
through a swamp
of thick sticky mud.
2. You are slipping
on ice over a
frozen lake, which
is creaking and
cracking with
every step.

Rituals
A ritual is a ceremony consisting of a set actions or words
that are performed in a particular order.
You could include a ritual in your
drama about a journey that belongs
to the people you meet on the way.
Your ritual could be a traditional one,
such as a wedding (the photo shows
an Indian bride) or a funeral. Or your
ritual could be more unusual, for
example, to praise the new cherry
blossoms or to banish evil spirits.
Rituals often mark the beginnings and ends of
events, and participants share their emotions.

Creating your own ritual
Your ritual could contain a mixture of the following elements:
chanting, movement, props, food or drink, music, dance,
costumes and make-up, masks, sacrifices or offerings.
Start with a simple structure and
build up the complexity in stages.
You might choose to have a person
or a group leading the ritual to help
the participants to remember it.
Rehearse it in stages, and make
sure that everyone is focussed
when you perform it.

Going on a journey
You have considered ways of freeing the imagination, using
props imaginatively, creating different atmospheres through
sound and lighting, and experimenting with speech and
movement. All of these skills will help you to create a strong
drama about a journey.
