Genres
A genre refers to a category, or type, of literature, film, music
or theatre. Genres include horror, musical theatre or punk
music.
Using the timer, try to list as
many different genres as you
can think of in 30 seconds.
In theatre, genres can be useful
in helping us to see links and
connections between plays.
However, being labelled with a genre can lead an audience
to make assumptions about content and purpose.
If a film is advertised as a romantic comedy what
would you expect the plot to include?

Egyptian ritual
The earliest known theatre event was the performance of
sacred Egyptian plays telling the myth of the Egyptian gods
Osiris and Isis. The story was performed in annual festivals
throughout Egypt over 2500 years BCE.
The relationship between drama
and religion is a recurring one.
For thousands of years, drama
has been used as a means of
teaching people about religion.
The ritual elements of this early
religious drama would have
enhanced the sense of
importance of the festivals.
