• Good morning, class, and welcome back from your extended weekend! I
hope you all made the most of it 
• No Homework tonight
• As you enter class, you should hear a song playing over the speakers.
Please have a seat, open up your ELA A notebook, write today’s date and
respond to the following:
• What type of vibe or mood does the music give off? How does it make
you feel? What does it remind you of?

About the Author
 The Cay was written by Theodore Taylor.
 As a kid, enjoyed roaming and exploring fields, muddy creeks,
and salt marshes --> Adventure-oriented
 During Korean War, stationed in the Caribbean

 Read an account about a small boy who was lost at sea after a
German U-boat sank his ship
 All these experiences inspired The Cay
• Cay (noun): a low island made of sand or coral
World War II
 Allies (U.S., France, Great Britain) vs. Axis (Germany, Italy,
Japan)
 War began in 1939 due to Germany invading Poland
 Following Pearl Harbor, December 7th, 1941, U.S. entered the
War on the side of the Allies
 Other major events include The Holocaust, The Bombing of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Curacao, a Caribbean Island
 To survive during WW II, England needed supplies from North
America.
 Curacao, the Caribbean island in The Cay, produced gasoline
and oil needed for war
Curacao, a Caribbean Island
 Large tankers transported these resources from the island
across the Atlantic Ocean to England
 Curacao - Ruled by Dutch, but African and Caribbean in culture
German U-Boats
 German Submarines - "Unterseeboote“
 These U-Boats destroyed the supply ships using torpedoes
 During the war, they sunk over 5,000 ships
