Welcome to today’s history lesson….. World War II We’re going to step back in time again! We’re going to go back to World War II, but this time to a different setting than before. We will also learn about another country that was involved in World War II. Here we go…. First, let’s remember some of the images of World War II we looked at previously… We now understand how the United States became officially involved in World War II, but that isn’t all there is to the story. World War II was a long and difficult war that lasted, for the United States, from December 1941 to September 1945. There were three major countries that were against the United States and their allies. Those three countries were known as the Axis Powers. AXIS POWERS OF WORLD WAR II Germany Japan Italy Look at these created images of the Axis Powers. Who do you think might have created them and what is their point-of-view? We would all grow old before we could cover everything that took place during World War II. Many things happened in many different places all over the world. So, for now, let’s focus on: • One of the Axis Powers: Germany • Germany’s leader: Adolf Hitler • Time: World War II, 1942 • Place: Curacao, West Indies Germany’s leader: Adolf Hitler One of Germany’s most powerful weapons! U-boat This was one of the most important areas fought over in the entire U-boat war. In May 1942 the German U-boats began to sink merchants in these waters at an alarming rate. Here they saw the chance to literally strangle the allied war effort by cutting the vital supply line of oil and aluminum. With more U-boats available, due to very long time-away-from-battle for each boat, they might have succeeded. Even though the U-boat visited the area throughout the war, after 1942 the momentum had swung in favor of the allies through a massive build-up there. The island of Curacao is located in the Caribbean Sea. It is one of many islands that are a part of the territory known as the West Indies.
