AIMS
- verify functionality of D1 – D2 magnets after resistor change (in view of the incoming run)
25/3
- establish working currents
- check water (after leak fixed)
- measure magnetic field (check polarity)
- Q4-6 to be tested
27/3
- D1-2 soak test
… and check polarity
- Q1 soak test
OPERATIONS
25/3 15:00  18:30
- temperature probes on D1 (flow+return pipes), run for ~2hrs
- continuous monitoring (IR laser gun)
- Hall probe measurements of the field
- quick check of D2 (similar procedure)  discover B flip (cables inverted during some tests)
-found instability both in D1 and D2 PS (oscillation) after 250 A (D1) and 100 A (D2)
- MH and GC sent oscilloscope data to Danfysik, they cannot reproduce the oscillation but suggested
some modifications
27/3 … so far
- MH applied suggested modifications on D1 PS, we switch on as long as vacuum pipe ready
- plan to test the other magnets … tonight

RESULTS & PLANS
- D1: max current 250 A (instead of 300). PS reaches a resonance instability
- D2: max current 100 A (instead of 200). Ditto.
- water: OK
- For the time being be run at the above current (stable + safe)
- Q1 to be soak-tested
- Q4-6 ditto
- Vacuum pipe being pumped, then leak test

ISIS Schedule meetings – Agenda for MP [C.R.]
- The agenda for the machine physics period has now been agreed.
MICE shifts:
- MICE has a short ~ 1-2 hour shift on Saturday evening 29th March (precise time TBC). It is quite possible that ISIS
will not be running by this time.
- MICE has two more shifts on Wednesday 2nd April from 18.00 pm until 08.00 on 3rd April, and Friday 4th
April from 18.00 pm until 08.00 on 5th April.
- I expect the machine will not be used between ~midnight and 08.00 during the rest of the week.
MICE Operations:
- We agree to close the target gate valve during the user run
- We agree to close the target gate valve until a radiation survey is made in the MICE hall with the synchrotron running.
ISIS startup:
- Main magnet will turn on at 8 pm on Thursday 27th March, after which time there will be restricted access to
the synchrotron room.
- There will be a vibration check ~ 8 am Friday morning; the ion source will be switched on; and there will be 1-2 hrs of
testing in the injection linac.
- Synchrotron beam will come on ASAP after this. Typically I would guess the DSA will be available until around noon on
Friday, although it depends on how things go in the synchrotron.

Chris

Target Today … [D. Findlay]
Marco, Ken, Andy,
I've been to look at the optical window underneath the MICE target. If you put a mirror underneath the port then shine a torch obliquely on
the window (not on the mirror), you can clearly see dust on the interior surface of the window. The dust is not on the exterior surface — I
cleaned the exterior surface of the window with alcohol and the dust was still there. But clearly you should go and look for yourselves. Sunil
has seen it this morning as well.
Although we're always careful about cleaning vacuum items before they go on to the machine, we can't be absolutely sure, I suppose, that the
dust wasn't there to begin with and is therefore unrelated to the target operation — and after all, it's quite inconsistent with the absence of dust
after ~1 million activations at Sheffield — but I do think it means we have to go very carefully from now on. Perhaps, in the circumstances, we
should pull back the 10000 further dips we agreed yesterday to 5000, but we should certainly try and take a photo of the dust now with a flash
camera and compare it with a similar photo after another 5000 dips.
