Sentence Clause Notes
Independent Clause
An independent clause can stand on it’s own as a
complete sentence. It has a subject and a verb
and is a complete thought.
Example: “People with the best intentions can still
make mistakes”
Dependent Clauses
Dependent clauses contain a subject and a
verb, but do not express a complete thought
and cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Examples: “When I arrived at school”
“No matter how you look at it”
Simple Sentence
One independent clause
Example: “I went to the store.”
Compound Sentence
Two or more independent
clauses
Example: “I went to the store, but
the deli was out of turkey.”
Complex Sentence
One independent and at least one dependent clause
Example: “When I arrived at the store, the deli was out of
turkey.”

Compound-Complex Sentence
Two or more independent clauses and at least one
dependent clause
Example: “When I arrived at the store, the deli was out of
turkey, but the manager said they would have more
tomorrow.”
Example: “Whatever my uncle cooks for Thanksgiving, I’m
sure it will be delicious; he always makes the best food.”

Adverbial Clauses
Can modify verbs, adverbs and adjectives by telling
when, where, why, how, how much and under what
condition.
Examples:
Unless you run fast, you will miss the bus.
 Whether you like it or not, you have to go to bed
now.
Noun Clauses
Performs the same function as a noun. Informs who, what,
where.
Examples:
Alyssa is the only one who knows where the bookstore
is.
My puppy will eat whatever he finds on the floor.
Adjectival Clauses
Describes a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
Examples:
Grandpa remembers the old days when there
was no television.
The people waiting all night outside the Apple
store are trying to purchase a new iPhone.
What types of clauses are these?
1. Now that everyone has left the party, we need to start cleaning.
2. The moment when the clown burst in to surprise the teacher was
great!
3. Since I'll be working late, I’ll eat downtown.
4. A person who trusts no one can't be trusted.
5. I know that the tide is turning.
6. The carpets which you bought last year have gone moldy.
