Joey loved painting waterfalls, trees and
birds.
•How many verbs can you find in this
sentence? What are they?
•loved , painting
•Actually the main verb is “loved” and
“painting” is only a gerund.
What is a “Gerund”?
•A “Gerund” is verbal that ends in
~ing (e.g. painting).
•It functions as a noun rather than a
verb.
e.g. John loves apples.
John loves reading.
Both “apples”
and “reading”
are the objects
in the
sentences and
they function
as nouns.
Points to Note:
•We can use “Gerunds” after certain verbs.
The following are some common examples:
-love, like, enjoy, hate, dislike, go, stop,
start.
What did all the elephants enjoy doing?
play in the
forest
All the elephants enjoyed playing in the
forest.
What did all the children enjoy doing?
sing in the
music room
All the children enjoyed singing in
the music room.
What did the students enjoy doing?
eat at school
The students enjoyed eating at
school.
