Chapter 2 (Present Continuous
and Simple Present)
The verbs are not used in the present
continuous (I am ~ing):
like love want know understand
remember depend prefer hate need
mean believe forget
Simple present tense or present continuous:
How often __________ a newspaper?
“Where’s Tom?” “He_______ a shower.”
It______ raining. I_______ want to go out.
Chapter 3 (Past Continuous)
Compare
the past continuous and
simple past:
I was walking home when I met Dave.
I walk home after the party last night.
We use the simple past and the past
continuous together to say that something
happed in the middle of something
continuous:
I hurt my back while I was working in the garden.
I was walking downtown when I saw Dave, so I
stopped and talked for a while.
Chapter 4 (Present perfect)
A.
The experience (Something happened the first
time):
Have you ever tried...?
Have you read Harry Potter? No I haven’t read it.
B.
Recently / in the last .../ so far /since...
Have you heard from Brian recently?
Everything is going well. We haven’t had any problems
so far.
I am hungry. I haven’t eaten anthing sincce breakfast.
Today/ this year/ this semester, etc. when the
period is not finished yet.
C.
I have drunk four cups of coffee today.
Have you had a vacation this year?
Chapter 5 (Reported Speech 1)
Direct Speech:
.Tome said, “ I woke up feeling sick, so I stayed in bed.”
Jenny said, “ I want to go away for the weekend, but I don’t
know where to go.”
Reported Speech:
A:That restaurant is expansive.
B: It is? I thought you said it was cheap.
“ I don’t have much free time.” She said she didn’t have
much free time.
When we reported speech, the main verb of the sentence is
usually past. The rest of the sentence is usually past, too.
Chapter 6 (Report Speech 2)
Direct Speech:
Ann said, “ I want to go to New York next year.”
Jenny said, “ Taiwan is more exciting than Korea.”
“Don’t shout,” I said to Jim.
Reported Speech:
Ann said that she wants to go to New York next year. /
Ann said that she wanted to go to New York next year.
Tom said that Taiwan is more exciting than Korea. / Tom
said that Taiwan was more exciting than Korea.
I told Jim not to shout
If you report something and it is still true, you do not need to
change the verb. We also use the infinitive (to V.) in reported
speech.
Chapter 7 (Questions)
Direct question:
Who wants something to eat?
What happened to you last night?
How many people came to the meeting?
How much will it cost?
Claire asked, “What time do the banks close?”
Indirect question:
She asked if I was willing to travel.
I wanted to know what you did in my spare time.
Can you tell me how far it is to the airport?
