Unit 4
A.A. 2013/2014
We form the present perfect using the
auxiliary verb have/has + the past
participle of the lexical verb
Examples: I have bought a new phone, She
has walked to school, He has driven a new
car, They have eaten at a Sushi restaurant
Be careful as the third person singular in the
abbreviated form He/she/it’s (worked) is the
same as in the simple present He/she/it’s
(ugly). The context will help to understand
Been to: I have been to China, Have you ever
been to Australia? It is the first time I have
been to that restaurant
Been to v gone to:
I have been to the US (I went to the US and
came back)
I have gone to the US (I’m still there)
Present Perfect vs Past Simple
Present Perfect

Have I worked?
I haven’t worked
He has gone
Has he gone?
He hasn’t gone
Past Simple

Did I work?

Did he go?
He didn’t go
Present Perfect vs Past Simple
We use the PRESENT PERFECT
for a period of time that continues
from the past until now
We use the SIMPLE PAST
for finished time in the past
For example today, this week, since 1967
I have washed my car.
(It is clean now)
It hasn’t rained this week .
I have never visited the USA.
I washed my car
yesterday.
It didn’t rain last week.
I visited New York last week.
Present Perfect vs Past Simple
REMEMBER !
Present Perfect
- Describes actions in the past (we don’t know
when) with a result NOW (Present)
Past Simple
- We know exactly when an action happened in
the past, it has nothing to do with NOW
