Onto the STEM of the verb you add the
appropriate ending according to the
SUBJECT (conjugated forms)
Yo (1st person singular) + querer (inifinitive)
Drop the ending –er  quer
Stem-change e  ie
Add the 1st person singular ending -0
quier + 0 = quiero
 Yo quiero
Conjugations for verbs that end in –ir:

In stem-changing verbs, the endings stay the
same!
But there is a vowel change in the STEM in
certain instances.

When you conjugate the verb preferir, the
second “e” changes to “ie” in all forms
EXCEPT nosotros(as) & vosotros(as).
