The preterite is one of the past tenses in
Spanish
 It is used to express and describe actions
that are completed in the past

› First, we will review subject pronouns
› Then, we will learn the preterite verb endings
for regular –AR, -ER and –IR verbs

As you proceed, think about why it is
important to be able to use the past tense
Singular
Plural
Yo = I
Nosotros = we
Tú = you (informal)
*Vosotros = y’all (informal)
Él = he
Ella = she
Ud. = you (formal)
Ellos = they (masculine)
Ellas = they (feminine / all girls)
Uds. = you all
*Vosotros is only used in Spain. We will not be using vosotros in this course.
Always use Uds.
Just like the familiar present tense in Spanish, all verbs will be broken down
into two parts before conjugating. Remember, we do this in English as well:
“He walks”
