Schedule Time for Reading
Practice
Implementing an AR system
Key Component
Flexible, accessible library
• Plan check-out procedures for books
from your classroom and school
• Establish a routine so that students
regularly visit the school library
What research shows:
60 min. = elementary
30 min = middle
20 min. = high school
•Read a book to a student, read the quiz to
him
•Read with a student, read the quiz with
her
•Recorded Voice Quizzes are available
(sample quiz on Renlearn website)
Find the Zone of Proximal
Development (ZPD)
Reading grade level range in which
a student will be challenged without
being frustrated.
When a student reads within this
range, he or she is growing as a
reader.
Determine a student’s
initial ZPD
Adjust ZPD based on
student performance
• Use grade-equivalent score from
STAR Reading or other standardized
test
• Or use your professional judgment to
estimate
• STAR Reading and suggested ZPDs are
guidelines only
• Monitor quiz results and broaden ZPDs as
needed
• Average score of 85% and above indicates
student is working in a good ZPD
Check the TOPS Report Immediately
• Prints after each quiz
• Gives students immediate feedback on
how they did on the quiz
• Includes data on quiz just taken and
cumulative data
•
•
•
Get TOPS Report after each quiz
Check score and record on log
Show teacher the report promptly
•
Check overall progress so far:
•
•
•
•
Average of 85% or higher shows student is
reading with appropriate ZPD
If average below 85%, discuss strategies for
improvement
Give positive comment or suggestion

Use the Student Reading Log
Students keep track of daily reading
Record ZPD, book information, pages
read daily, and quiz scores
Library pass: ZPD is accessible when
selecting books
Quiz ticket: Check that student has
finished a book before quizzing
Take Status of the Class Daily
An activity that you do
Meet briefly with students one-on-one
30 to 60 second each
Puts the “guided” in guided independent
reading practice
Briefly review and initial reading log
Is book within ZPD?
If not, why not?
Has student read reasonable number of pages?
Show your interest in student’s progress
Check for application of skill or strategy
Establish A Routine
May not get to every student every day
First: Students ready to take a quiz
Second: Students starting new books
Third: Students continuing a book
Instructional: Best way to detect
problems, figure out solutions, and
reinforce comprehension
Motivational: “Eye-to-eye” and “kneeto-knee”
Review the Diagnostic Report Weekly
•
•
•
Provides a snapshot of every student and
the class as a whole
Identifies students having trouble
Review weekly
•
•
•
•
Letter codes indicate “at risk”
No quizzes taken during period (A)
Low average percent correct (B, C)
Low average percent correct, but high
point (E, F)
•
•
Quality: Average percent correct on
Reading Practice Quizzes
The goal is for students to average at
least 85% correct- 90% is better
