What is Math Studies?
We will be:
• Studying topics from algebra –
linear, quadratic, and
exponential models
• Geometry – right triangle
ratios, surface area and volume
of three-dimensional solids,
finding angle measures
What is Math Studies?
We will also be studying:
• statistics – graphical representations
of one variable and two variable
statistics, measures of central
tendency, correlation, the normal
distribution
• Probability
• An introduction to differential
calculus
• Logic
What is IB Math Studies?
• The course will be based upon the
IB Diploma Program Mathematics
Studies Standard Level textbook
• There is a formal IB Exam in May –
required to sit through (80% of IB
grade) + an internal assessment
(20% of IB grade)
That said…
• My hope is that you will find
this class to be an
opportunity to ask questions
and explore very relevant
and exciting mathematics in
a safe environment.
Yet…
• Leave feeling confident
enough to take mathematic or
science courses at the
university level...
Goal: Build the Tallest
Freestanding Structure
• You will be working in your group
• The entire marshmallow must be on
top
• Use as much or as little of the kit –
string, tape, and 20 spaghetti sticks
• Break up the spaghetti, string or tape
– create new structures
• The challenge will last 18 minutes…
See you on Thursday!!!
Welcome Back!!!
• Please pick-up and complete an
information sheet
• Nametags
• Some words about the syllabus
• Number Sets + Unit Conversions
• Textbook Checkout
• Unit Conversions – Exit Slip
My goal -
• All of your time spent in this
classroom will be dedicated to
math
• Time outside of class studying
math will be kept minimal
The most important expectation
according to Mrs. Smith
• RESPECT!!!!
Respect for yourself and your ideas
Respect for each other and each
other’s ideas
Respect for the teacher or guest
teacher
Respect for students
Respect for the content
Respect for the environment around
us

problems and investigations + problem
presentations (5 points)
• Tests/Quizzes (70%)
• Internal Assessment (10% semester 1;
20% semester 2)
Homework
• Suggested homework problems
from the textbook will be assigned
with each lesson
• Written out solutions to these
problems are located on IB Math SL
website
• Most homework will be tied to the

connections between topics,
• 2) serve as application problems,
• 3) provide review,
• 4) provide practice for your internal
assessment.
Class Work
• Class work is scored based on
completion and presentations of
your group’s worked out solutions
• Class work can vary each day and is
dependent on that day’s lesson
• Worth up to 5 points
• If a student is absent for the class
work, the grade will be coded as ABS
Checkpoint Quiz
• Given after presentations of the worked
out class work
• All students will be expected to
complete the checkpoint quiz but only
one paper in each group will be scored.
• If a student is absent for the checkpoint
quiz, the grade will be coded as ABS
Tests/Quizzes
• Quizzes (20-40 points)
• Tests (60-100 points) – One at
end of each unit. No retakes.
