House Investigates Flint, Michigan
Water Crisis
Major Takeaways From the Hearing “Examining Federal
Administration of the Safe Drinking Water Act in Flint, Michigan”
?
Takeaway
Details
Both the EPA and the state
accepted some
responsibility for the
problem, but both also
pointed some level of
blame
Michigan Department of Environmental
Quality (MDEQ) incorrectly advised the city
that corrosion control treatment was not
needed. The state said the implementation
of the federal Lead and Copper Rule from
the EPA was ineffective.
People familiar with the
water crisis were missing
from the hearing, and
many of the people
present at the hearing
were new to their roles
Former Flint Emergency Manager Darnell
Earley, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder,
former EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan
Hedman, and former MDEQ Director Dan
Wyant were all not present at the hearing.
MDEQ Director Keith Creagh just started the
role in January, and Deputy Assistant
Administrator for the EPA’s Office of Water,
Joel Beauvais, just started his role in the fall.
Children and adults in Flint
are still suffering from lead
exposure
A Flint mother at the hearing testified on
the development issues her children are
suffering from exposure.
