MATH
FROM A TOK
PERSPECTIVE!
By:Adriana Arguello
What is MATH?? :S :S
Personal: Math is the explination of our
world in numbers.
Scholarly:a science or group of related
sciences dealing with the logic of
quantity and shape and arrngment.
The science of rigid proof
GENERAL OPINIONS
Mafer: “everything that’s numbers”
Sandra “Math is HORRIBLE”
Miguel “ you use math in everything!!”
Loany(responding) “That’s why the
CALULATOR EXISTS!!”
QUOTES ON MATH
“The ENORMUS USEFULNESS OF MATHEMATICS IN THE
NATURAL SCIENCES IS SOMETHING BORDERING ON THE
MYSTERIOUS, AND THERE IS NO RATIONAL EXPLINATION FOR
IT” Eugene Wigner
Every thing that can be counted does not count. Everything
COUNTS CAN NOT BE COUNTED” Albert Einstein
“INDSTEAD OF HAVING “ANSWERS “ ON A MATH TEST,THEY
SHOULD JUST CALL THEM “IMPRESSIONS”,SO WHAT, CAN’T WE
ALL BE BROTHERS” Jack Handy
“MATHEMATICS BEGAN WHEN IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT A
BRACE OF PHEASANTS AND A COUPLE OD DAYS HAVE
SOMETHING IN COMMON: THE NUMBER TWO “ Bertrand
Russell”
IMPORTANCE IN
EDUCATION
Q: What is the first derivative of a cow? A: Prime Rib!
What is the the use of math?
Take a second and imagine school without
math?
How
How
How
How
How
would the buildings be built?
would schedules/calendars be made?
would teachers grade?
could you buy your food at the cafeteria?
would ANYTHING you use from
pencils,paper,SHOES,lockers to celphones ,
ipods and even makeup or perfum?
Importance in education
Helps children develop logic and reasoning skills
Children learn the skill of looking for a solution (may be
applied to all aspects of life)
as students learn more math, the rationale is that their minds will
eventually develop into logical entity that can resolve any
difficult situations.
Math will not only earn you a grade , YOU WILL NEED IT YOU
ENTIRE LIFE
Importance for your future : “as students learn more math, the
rationale is that their minds will eventually develop into logical
entity that can resolve any difficult situations.”
History of math
Evidence of counting since 50,000 B.C
May be divided to four periods:
Primitive: simple equations (addition/subtraction
multiplication/division)
Arabic:base numer 10 invented
Greco-roman: geometry discovered (pythagorean
theorem)
Renicancee: burst of knowledge. Ith of modern math

PROBLEM!!:
“ONE STRAIGHT LINE THROUGH ANY GIVEN
POINT IS PARRALLEL TO A GIVEN LINE”
Parrallel line must be infinite
What happens at infinity?
NO ONE CAN PROVE THIS ENTIRLY TRUE
RIEMANNIN GEOMETRY BORN (SUM OF ANLGES IN
∆ IS + THAN 180)
PROBLEMS!!
Problem of consistency
Formal System NOT proven FREE of contradictions
No proven contradiction in formal system yet
Clear intructions may be impossible to fufill (not entierly
understandable)
*story of the barber + the king
mathematical
term "pie" whose true value is infinite which is
a concept we cannot comprehend
Imperfect has created by imperfect beings
Fermatユs ヤLast Theoremユ remained unproved for 358 years, until 1995.
Incomplete (abstract opens door to error +contradiction)
JOKES FOR NERDS!
“ NOT SIMPLIFYING IS HAS BAD HAS HAVING DIAHREA IN A
SPACE SUIT!” ~Mr.McDowel
Q: What do you get if you divide the cirucmference of a jack-o-lantern
by its diameter? A: Pumpkin Pi!
Q: What does the zero say to the the eight? A: Nice belt!
Q: Why couldn't the blonde write the number ELEVEN ?A: She
didn't know what ONE came first...
