There is often a scale issue between mathematics and
application sciences.
An application scientist often needs an answer to
practical problems now while issues that
mathematics can address successfully make take
decades to resolve.
As far as mathematics issues, we may want to keep an
eye out for problems that live on a scale past
immediate deployment and use – problems that will
arise over the next decade
MMake use of the geometric and topological properties of
networks
DDesign and optimization of networks, e.g. communication
protocols, node placement
AApply pattern recognition, data visualization, data smoothing
techniques
AApply multiscale analysis techniques
HHierarchical structure in sensor networks:
what objectives need centralized station? What
objectives can be decentralized? Math tools?
AAlgorithm analysis and design: theoretical
guarantees on performance, robustness,
adaptiveness, quality-of-service
