Tonight’s Goals
• Emphasize the importance of mathematics in high school
and beyond!
• So why does math in school look so different?
Math and Cosmetology
• Geometry
• Trigonometry
• Ratios (hair coloring)
• The haircut is executed at certain angles, with the stylist
starting from a base point and building upon it. Haircuts
are built around shapes and sectioning.

• Become a teacher of Mathematics!
So why does the math I take in school
look so different?
• Not everyone wants to be a firefighter
• Not everyone wants to be a fashion designer
• Not everyone wants to be an engineer
• Not everyone wants to be a(n) ______________
• A role of school mathematics in this country is to teach a
broad range of skills and concepts that apply to multiple
careers. We teach EVERYONE.
• So what can you do? Get involved!
• And remember, studying mathematics develops logical
reasoning, problem-solving, perseverance, and ______!!
Personal Advice for Parents
• Jonesy (11th grade) – wedding planner,
heart surgeon, business owner
• Pre-AP route
• Ethan (5th grade, Special Ed) – doctor
• Algebra (8th)
• Geometry & Algebra II (9th)
• Pre-calculus (10th)
• “On-level” classes
• Will be in math each year!
• AP Calculus & AP Statistics (11th)
• Quinn (9th grade) - computer
programmer, movie director, actress
• Started Pre-AP; moved to “On-level”
• Now in Algebra (9th)
• Geometry (10th)
• Algebra II (11th)
• Pre-Calculus (12th)
Quinn taught us:
Challenging, but
not unreasonable
Keep Them
in MATH!
