•Japan- is a chain of islands that is east of
China in the Pacific Ocean
•Japan has 3,000 islands but 4 main ones
•They are called Hokkaido, Honshu,
Shikoku, and Kyushu
•Most of Japan is covered with mountains

•There is not very much farmland, most
people fish for food
•Japan is far from main continents so their

•Officials and students were sent to China to
study their civilization-culture and way of life of
a group of people
•They learned and took Buddhism from Korea

from both places

How did Prince Shotoku rule Japan?

•Prince Shotoku- a man who ruled Japan and
wanted to create a strong government
•He used China as an example
•He created a constitution- a written plan for the
government, that gave all of the power to the
emperor
•He built Buddhist temples and monasteries
•The Horyuji Temple is Japan’s oldest temple
