• Tsunamis are
series of waves in
the ocean or
another body of
water caused by an
Earthquake,
Landslide,
Volcanic eruption
or Meteorite
Impact.
тѕυηαмι ƒα¢тѕ
• 1. Many early geological, geographical, and
oceanographic texts refer to tsunamis as "seismic
sea waves."
• 2. The Japanese translation for tsunami is 津波
• 3. The original Japanese term literally translates as
"harbor wave."
4. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, underwater
explosions, landslides, Earth movements, bolide
impacts, and other disturbances above or below
water all have the potential to create a tsunami.

Did you know? Smaller earthquakes in Japan can start
tsunamis that can only hit nearby coasts, but can also
travel there in a few minutes.
Did you know? Tsunamis have a small wave height offshore,
and a very long wavelength which is why they generally
don’t get realised at sea, forming only a slight growth
mainly about 300mm above the normal sea level. They
grow height when they reach shallower water.
Did you know? There are only a few other languages that
have a native word for this destructive wave. In the Tamil
language the word is aazhi peralai, in the Acehnese
language it is ie beuna or alon buluek. On Simeulue island
off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, in the
Defayan language the word is semong also in the Sigulai
language it is emong.

How does a Drawback occur?
A drawback occurs because the tectonic plate on one side of
the fault sinks during the earthquake, causing the
overlaying water to move outwards with the smallest of
the wave at its front.
What is at Drawback?
If the first part of a tsunami to reach land is a small wave
called a drawback, rather than a wave crest, The water
along the shoreline moves away dramatically, reveling
normally hidden areas.

On December 26th 2004 an Earthquake of
9.3 on the richter scale struck off the
Northwest coast, of the Indian island of
Sumatra. Which triggered a tsunami, of 25
meters high and killed nearly 300,000
people.
мσяє ƒα¢тѕ!!
• 1. Tsunamis frequently happen in Japan
approximately 195 times have been recorded.
• 2. The 1960 Valdivia Earthquake, 1964 Alaska
Earthquake and 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake are
recent examples of mega powerful earthquakes that
created tsunamis that can cross entire oceans.
• 3. A tsunami in the deep ocean has a wavelength of
about 200 kilometers.
• 4. About 80% of tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean,
but can happen where there are large amounts of
water, including lakes.
